August 17, 2002 Today started out as kinda a strange day
Jim's thinking he might just stay home today
It was an odd day for the middle of August, in more than one way. We used the Radar, and GPS to find our way to Santa Cruz, 25 miles offshore. We pass this important looking vessel, with LOTS of electronics
We arrive at prisoner's , finding it calm, but enveloped in Fog
So, here we are, Maia, Erin, Kit, Jerry, John & Jim, anchored at the same spot where the big White Sea Bass was taken a few weeks ago.
There are a few interesting looking Caves ashore, not far from the boat
Kit decides to prepare the rods for a little fishing
We had noticed a lot of small Mackerel around us, would be fun to play with them
From the way the pole is bending, we start to think this might not be a Mackerel
Proper body language, and facial expressions are tantamount to successful fishing
Whatever this is on the line, it's BIG! Kit has been fighting it for almost 25 minutes already
We begin to attract spectators, all wondering what Kit has hooked into!
After almost 40 minutes, the catch is tiring and Kit is bringing it near the boat
At first, we had hoped it was a large Halibut, but now we can see what it is.
This thing is BIG! The Gaff is ready!
It turns out to be a Bat Ray. They can get as large as a 6' wing span, and 200lbs.
This Ray was a good 5' span, so must have weighed about 145lbs or so
After giving this Guy a stern lecture about taking food from strangers, we were able to release him unharmed. That is except for his bruised ego.
There always seems to be something new and interesting out on the Sea. I've been at Sea for over 32 years, and still see new and exciting things, always learn something new too. Today, I learned from Kit to stay away from that guy in the green shorts! Click here to return to Recent Outings by Date
